Well first purchase what is called EL Cable. I call ir rope lights. it is a small 5 foot long string that lights up. there are various sites where you can find these. just type them into a search engine. make sure you get one that is for the computer. most of them come w/ a controller so that you can have them blink w/ music and so on.
next you need to have the network adaptor.
now assuming your network adaptor is off the ps2 you will see 3 ports on the network adaptor 1 on the top left and 2 on the bottom. now the 2 on the bottom are actually for the HDD (release date of march us comes w/ FFXI). now plug the plug of the rope light into the bottom left port (the only port it will fit onto) it won't go on all the way snuggly but it will go on enough to work. if your worried about it electric tape it. now slide the controller of the rope light into where the HDD would go. now you can either have the rope light come out the side where the network adaptor connects w/ the PS2 making sure not to get the rope light in the way of the screws. or the rope light should be thin enough to fit through the little holes in the front grill mesh of the PS2. now you can run the rope light anywhere you want around your ps2. now make sure the network adaptor is screwed into the PS2.
now turn on the PS2 the light should blink once then a pause and blink again.
this is the down side of this MOD. to have the light on at all times you have to connect to the internet, once you see the flash from the front of the PS2 when it connects the rope light should come on and stay on.
be sure not to put the rope light infront of the cd tray or the controller ports. these lights are very flexable and can form into almost any design.
now you can do this MOD w/ any 12 volt computer component. or if you have a spare PC plug that fits on the port you can hardwire any 12 volt thing to it. but again it will only work once connected to the net.
I haven't found any safe way to hard wire anything into the PS2 itself. if you attempt to hard wire something directly into the PS2 DO NOT use the black and white wires. these are not 12 volt wires they are regular house current and will burn out anything less less then that. also make sure to completely turn off your PS2 and disconnect the power wire before doing anything to the PS2
here are some pics to help you out.
the first pic is of the rope light the second is the back of the network adaptor.
first pic is the rope light connected to the network adaptor and the second pic is the back of the PS2 where the network adaptor plugs into.
the first pic is of the rope light coming out the side of the adaptor after it is connected to the PS2 and the second pic is of the PS2 w/ the rope light set up in the dark.
and here is the cover of my ps2.
